Monster Harvest is a farming RPG and monster collectable game. Who doesn’t want to farm and also collect cute monsters to destroy enemies with?
The basic premise is simple: your uncle has called you to take over his old farm utilizing the new experiments he’s created in his laboratory. Upon arrival, your eccentric scientist uncle shows off the life he has created: Planimals! These are mutated plant-slash-monster hybrids that will follow you around and fight against enemies.
Monster Harvest wears its inspiration on its sleeve. From the moment you jump into the game, you will see an eerily familiar art style that just screams its source material. I am almost certain they made off-brand trees. That’s not to say Monster Harvest isn’t pretty. Heck, the game looks fabulous utilizing beautiful 2DHD sprite work similar to the eye-meltingly gorgeous games that Square Enix have been pumping out.
This game centers around two main mechanics – farming and fighting. In order to make money and create items, you must grow crops and clear your uncle’s farm. You also have to make it into a suitable place for you and your planimals. There is a day and night cycle that lacks a timer, which is a welcome addition in the world of farming sims. There is a stamina bar to keep an eye on, but what is also cool is that there is an option to rest until evening in order to replenish some of it. Otherwise, you use food items from the farm or from town to build it back up.
As far as ideas go, Monster Harvest is built upon some of the best. A farming simulator in the vein of classic Harvest Moon, plus the monster-catching-and-battling of Pokémon? These two styles of gameplay really compliment each other, and if executed correctly, should be a slam-dunk. I will give it to the developers: they come extremely close to pulling it off.
Monster Harvest’s biggest “gift” to the genre is the introduction of plant-based animals – Planimals. Your uncle discovered these little blighters and, every now and then, one of your carrots will gain sentience and vow to fight other sentient vegetables to the death. As a concept, it seems interesting enough, but in execution, it’s awful. It ties directly into the dungeon delving combat the genre is known for but manages to utterly destroy any and all semblance of fun, satisfaction, or being awake.
Monster Harvest has the potential to be an excellent game. It has a fun premise, interesting points to the town and the story, and a beautiful open world to explore. However, it feels more than a little superficial and feels aimless in its execution of the story points. Hopefully, some updates to the game in the future bring out its fullest potential.
